When we go through a tough time or a mistake, it’s easy to develop a fear that it will happen again and become imprisoned by our past… winning over our past becomes a daunting task! However, the scripture says “Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing… Isaiah 43:18-19
Winning over your past requires a complete surrender of your past to God and Leaving it behind. I mean, Look beyond your past and current circumstances so you can anticipate what God will do in your future… That’s Coming into an agreement with God against certain tendencies of your past.
These certain tendencies of low self-esteem; can’t trust people in a relationship, and always being afraid that they are going to leave. Not thinking anything good will ever happen, like a spirit of oppression making you want to shrink back can be traits that have been passed down.
Here is the key, God has raised you to break them. You are the one to put a stop to generational limitations and to start generational blessings. Just as trauma, dysfunctions, and wounds can be passed down, so can blessings, favour, confidence, and victory. You don’t have to let the past dictate your future, you can break free and set a new standard
When the Israelites were delivered out of slavery, they left Egypt and headed toward the Promised Land. This was after years of abuse and mistreatment, these two million people were finally free. As they were leaving so excited, then the Pharaoh changed his mind and sent his army to chase after them.
Well, Pharaoh represents the past, the hurts, the traumas, the injustice, the mistakes. The past will always come chasing you. The Israelites were trying to get into their future, but their past chased after them. Pharaoh’s men were catching up and they could hear the footprints from the horses getting closer and closer.
Anytime you try to move forward, don’t be surprised if you hear the past chasing you, reminding you of the mistakes you made. “You can’t expect anything good, you don’t deserve it. The hurts, the wrongs, those that walked away, it’s going to happen again”.
Those are the footprints of the enemy, whispering lies and trying to use your past to stand peed your future. The Israelites came to a dead end at the Red Sea. Their past caught up with them. The Pharaoh and all the chariots were just a few miles away, looked like they had been recaptured, and taken back to Egypt.
However, God will never let your past dictate your future. He will always find a way to escape. You may hear the footprints of your past chasing you now, you try to move forward but there’s always that guilt, the fear, that nagging feeling that is saying, you are going to get hurt again, or that mistake will always haunt you.
Can’t seem to get pass your past, that’s what happened to the Israelites. They had nowhere to go, then suddenly the Red Sea parted, God made a way where they didn’t see a way, and these two million people walked through on dry ground.
But God knew the Israelites would always be looking over their shoulders, living in fear, knowing that Pharaoh’s army could show up at any minute. God didn’t want them to be focused on the past, living with that threat, so He left the Red Sea open and swallowed up their past. (Exodus 14:29-31)
I’m sure the Israelites thought, “Oh, no they are going to catch us now. We made it through but they were faster than us” Right on time the walls of water came crashing down. All the enemy drowned, and not one of them survived. Now the Israelites never had to fear the Pharaoh again, the threat was gone.
Maybe you have had some footprints chasing you, and every time you try to move, you hear the past coming, reminding you of all your mistakes, the fears, and what is not going to work out. Like God did for them, He is taking care of your past and your fears.
You don’t have to live looking over your shoulder, letting those footprints call you to shrink back in case it happens again. This is a new day. That fear has been taken care of… So, fear not. Change the images you allow in your mind and move forward.
STOP LOOKING BACK!

Many times we are letting negative memories play, times we have been hurt, trauma we have experienced, that DNA that’s passed down of what our relatives went through… the movie screen of our mind, reminding us of the failures. Stop looking back and move forward.
Beloved, you can’t move forward when you are still looking back. Turn off all those images, and start seeing yourself blessed, happy, in great relationships, accomplishing your dreams, and rising to new levels.
The enemy would love for the negative things in your past to determine your identity, how you see yourself, your worth, and your value. If you have been mistreated, he will whisper, “It’s because you are not valuable”.
That person walked out on you, broke your heart… he whispered, “You are not attractive. You made mistakes and missed your priorities. You are not worthy. You can’t be blessed. Your past has tainted your future”.
Don’t believe those lies. Nothing that has happened in your past has lessened your value. You are still a son, a daughter of the Most High God. You are still a masterpiece, one of a kind, a prized possession.
Nothing you have been through, no trauma, no hurt, no injustice has stopped the purpose God has for you. Nothing has cancelled your assignment. You are not defined by your past, you are prepared by your past.
If God allowed it to happen, then it deposited something in you that you are going to need for your future. Now, you have to do your part and keep moving forward, keep making plans for the good things that are in store.
God is saying to you what he said to Moses at the Red Sea (Exodus 14:13), “The enemies you see today, you will see no more”. Your past has been taken care of. All those that were trying to stop you, the guilt, the hurts, the mistakes, God took care of them all.
You don’t have to live looking over your shoulder, hiding from mistakes, intimidated over what you have been through. You can be like the apostle Paul, leave the past behind and step into the great things God has for you. (Philippians 3:13-14)
And I know the trauma was real, the injustice, the betrayals, I’m not making light of that, but you have to be aware of the enemy’s schemes. He would love to convince you to shrink back, spend years hiding your gifts, living in regrets and afraid of what might happen.
No, it’s time to come out of hiding. The best part of your life is still in front of you. No more imprisonment by your past. You would not be alive if God did not have greater victories in your future. Guilt, shame, fear, and trauma have to go now!
I decree and declare that every bondage of your past is being broken off you right now. Strongholds of what people have spoken over you are coming down and I release you into the fullness of your destiny, in Jesus’ name.
The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”’!
